Since 2008, countries belonging to the visa waiver programme (PEV or Visa Waiver Program) are entitled toapply for an ESTA online before taking a flight or boat to the USA, or arrive by land from Mexico or the Canada. Passengers who have not registered with ESTA risk being banned from flying, although it is possible for them to regularise their situation at the airport at a possible extra cost. The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) is a procedure for determining the admissibility of visitors to the United States in order to determine whether they pose a risk to homeland security or law enforcement. The system checks law enforcement databases. Since 2 May 2022, the seizure of the form I-94W is replaced by the ESTA electronic authorisation.

If your ESTA is granted, it establishes that you are eligible to travel, but does not establish that you are eligible to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme. Upon arrival in the United States, you will be interviewed by a U.S. Border Protection officer at a port of entry who may determine whether you are inadmissible under the Visa Waiver Program or for any reason under U.S. law.

ESTA is not a visa.
It does not allow you to find a job, settle in the USA to live or do any other activity that American immigration would consider abusive. It does allow you to travel to the United States to benefit from visa exemption, if your situation allows.

For a travel to the United Statesthe electronic travel authorisation system is compulsory. The ESTA is valid two years for tourist or business stays of 90 days or for a transit to another country.

The ESTA for the United States can be obtained online for a fee of 19 € plus the intermediation fee. Your ESTA is eligible at all entry points. What's more, you will be asked for the ESTA when you board your flight or directly at the land border (from 2 May 2022). Without this document, it will be impossible to enter the United States. We advise you to apply for ESTA at least three days before you leave for the United States.
